Happy 2nd Birthday!

Bennett -

Happy Birthday! You are now 2 years old! You've been pretty excited about your "bifday" and it was a joy to watch your growing enthusiasm. You attended a party of a friend (Emma, whom Daddy says is your "girlfriend") last month and seeing her blow out her candles and have cake gave you something to look forward to and to talk about -- all the time.

We had a low-key birthday for you, which was fine by me. 2 days before your birthday, the Shipps came over for lunch and brought you McDonald's, your personal favorite. We had cupcakes and played until naptime. Saturday night was our "official" birthday meal, with lasagna and Aunt Erin coming to celebrate with us. Once again, you were thrilled with the blowing out of candles and having everyone sing to you. Sunday (your actual birthday) we spent at home, letting you slowly open and then play with your new toys. By the end of the day, you were actually singing your "song" to yourself. Precious!

You are precious, my sweet boy! It's been a crazy past 6 months for our family! You've been growing by leaps and bounds! At your 2 yr dr appointment, you weighed 28.4 lbs and were 35 1/2" long -- putting your weight at the 50th% and your height at 80th%. Looks like you might be long and lean like your daddy when you grow up!

The biggest event in your life has been the arrival of Baby Grant. You've handled the adjustment like a pro - there really haven't been any signs of jealousy on your end. At first, you pretended like he didn't exist, but in the past few weeks, you've started noticing him more and trying your little hardest to interact with him. When Grant is having some floor time, you get down and lay next to him and play with his toys. I try not to freak out about you squashing Grant but let you play, praying that this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

Right before Grant was born, you surprised me one day by recognizing the letter "M" in a book; however, you called it "donal's". Both of those actions caught me off-guard - I couldn't believe you knew the McDonald's sign and you were also able to recognize it in a book! Well, that just opened up a whole new world for you and you started learning more and more of your letters. Having Daddy home for 2 weeks at Christmas and then grandmas here when Grant was born, helped further cement your letters. You now can say your entire alphabet! You recognize all of them and even know that "B is for Bennett". You are also counting to 20. We start losing you in the late teens ("13, 14, 18, 18, 18, 18, 19, 20!!") but you can usually get them right when seeing them written out. Daddy has taught you many of your shapes -- circle, triangle, square, octagon, oval and you've just figured out that a stop sign is an octagon. Whenever you see one, you yell out, "Stop sign! OCTAGON!!" You know all the basic colors and even a few more. Blue is a favorite color right now.

Daddy received an iPad for his 30th birthday back in September and you think it's yours. You love to play on it. Love isn't quite a strong enough word, actually. Your daddy comes through the door each afternoon and it's the first word out of your mouth after "daddy". You have several games/apps on it that help you learn to count and review your letters.

Your vocabulary is out of control. You know everything. Seriously. You are just now putting several words together and it's so fun to know what you have to say. For the most part, that is. You talk constantly. You are loud and verbal and a joy to my heart! In my sleep-deprived state of mind, I feel like I'm missing out on this perfect opportunity to start some pre-preschool things with you. As soon as I get some more sleep, we are going to begin memorizing Scripture, poems, catechism and more songs. You love reading books and especially love filling in the words that you know. You so desperately want to communicate with us and be a part of our conversation. I can't believe how fast this is all happening!

At each meal, before we formally pray together, we offer you the chance to thank God for things. Without fail, you want to thank God for "donals and rice" (McDonald's and Pei Wei). You usually list off whatever is on the table/your plate and will go around the table and include whoever is sitting there. It wasn't long after Grant was born that you started including him too. You often want to thank God for Erin "Eeya", even if she isn't here for a meal. :) I love this time and it causes me to remember it's ok to thank God for everything I see too - He's given it all to us and so we should be thankful for windows, and candles, and books, and Pei Wei, and McDonald's, and Grant.

You are also testing the waters as far as our authority is concerned. Does "no" really mean "no"?? This keeps me on my toes and forces me to be in constant prayer for wisdom and guidance. We pray every night for a tender heart towards God and for you to be remorseful for your sins and desire to make things right when a wrong has been committed.

You never stop moving. Ever. You run everywhere you go. You want to throw all your toys, just to see how far they can go. You move from activity to activity at lightning speed. You are super into trains, thanks to your recent introduction to Thomas the Tank Engine! You love cars and Daddy has taught you the actual name to all your matchbox cars. I don't even know what they are called! You love legos and coloring. You still need to always have something in your hands - small bottles of lotion are preferred. :)

I could go on and on and on about all that you are doing and especially how much you are loved. I'm so grateful for these 2 years with you and count it a privilege to be your momma! I love you, sweet boy. You are my blessing!!
