Customer Service Agents

My question for this morning is this:

When companies hire their customer service phone representatives, do you think they make them take an English Proficiency Exam? Or are they like, "Sweet. You are barely understandable when you speak English. You're HIRED!"

Seriously.

I'm sure that these nice people can understand me and my English and are quite fluent in their writing and such. They just can't COMMUNICATE the language!!!!!

If I was in charge of a customer service department of a competitive, major corporation, I'd really get an edge on the market by making my new employees take a verbal proficiency exam and then hire only those who receive exceptional marks. Then, all those dear customers who call me, already frustrated with a problem (or else they wouldn't be calling ...), would not have their frustration heightened by the person they are speaking with from my department. No, instead, they'd get their problem answered the 1st time they called (instead of the 3rd or 4th time) and love me for giving them someone to talk to who could actually be understood.

Wow. What a breakthrough idea. I can't believe no one has thought of this before. Forget subbing for me. I'm going to look for a managing position in customer service!!

Oh my goodness, are you your grandfather's granddaughter or what? If they all spoke clear English what in the WORLD would we have to talk about at dinner?

So true! And the fine folks at Dell walk you through the same 15 steps regardless of your current technical problem. I'm not sure they can understand me! :)

Ugh! I'm with you on this. You're lucky if there are even based in the U.S. Many times now, customer service phone calls are out-sourced to places in India. Now THAT is frustrating, and is happening more and more.

Oh man! I just realized I posted as two different people (one time signed in, one time not), and therefore sounding like a major snob. Sorry about that - I was the one who did the "ugh" post. :o}
