A great weekend

We had a wonderful weekend. It really was great.

The roommate Kc had his last year in China now lives in Houston. Alex is a 9th grade physics teacher and teaches in an inner-city school down there. We've been pestering him for months about when he was going to come up and sleep on our oh-so-fabulous air mattress ... and he finally agreed to come hang out with us during his spring break. We had a fabulous time. :) So much laughing and watching the two guys play off of each other and just make me giggle. I cooked for them, cleaned up after them, and laughed at all their jokes. We stayed up late. We went putt-putting. We went out for dinner. We talked. We talked some more. And even some more. The guys played a good bit of Wii. And Kace creamed us in Settlers of Catan. (I don't know how that man does it, but EVERY TIME we play ... he wins. Seriously.)

But. It was good to be with an old friend. To encourage and be encouraged. Now, if there was just some way we could find a job at TCA for Alex ... those upper-school students wouldn't know what hit them. :)

We got a call on Saturday morning with some very sad news. One of Kc's little guys from last year (he was the one that gave Kace his lacrosse net) was diagnosed with leukemia. Justin is a precious, precious little boy. Such a sweetie. We got a call from someone from the school, letting us know about it but also letting us know that Justin had told his mom he'd really love to see Mr. Myers. So, last evening, we headed off to the Children's hospital in Dallas, armed with this great book that Kc had purchased a while back to read to our future sons someday ... but wanting to take Justin something, Kc felt that this book was just perfect for a little boy who is going to be sick in bed for a long time.

We finally found the floor where he was staying, but got turned back from seeing him. I guess he's a popular little guy and was worn out from all the visitors he'd already had earlier that day. The nurse on the floor promised she'd tell him that "Mr. Myers stopped by" and we gave her the book to give to him. Kc has already gotten an email this morning from Justin, thanking him for the book and saying how much he wished he could've seen him. Sounds like we'll be making our way back to the Children's hospital. I don't know what kind of luekemia he has been diagnosed with, but I do know that he's starting chemo today and has been told that his cancer is very treatable.

Have I mentioned that we just love this little guy? And it about breaks our heart to know how much suffering he's going to have to go through before all this is over.

Walking through those hospital corridors brought back all those memories of working for that flower shop the years between highschool and college. I used to hate and love, all at the same time, those occassions when I had to deliver flowers or balloons or usually candy and a stuffed animals to kids at Riley. I loved bringing them a present (even though it wasn't from me!) but hated seeing how sick they were and knowing they had a rough go ahead of them. Kids are precious, but I think sick children are even more precious.

Anyhoo ... it was a good weekend and I'm grateful for spring temps, new shoes, and a chance to minister to others.

This is a very touching post. We'll be praying for Justin and his fight ahead.

I'm sorry to hear about little Justin. I'm glad you guys made the effort to go and perhaps will go in the future. I have fond memories of a little guy we visited several times in Pittsburgh -- another very sad case but there are always bits of God's sunshine in them.

Sounds like you had a fun weekend!

I think that is one of the sweetest stories I've read in a long time. I retold it to Joe just now and started crying as I was saying it outloud. Just said a prayer for Justin.

And now you have to keep us updated on him, m'kay? Thanks.
