Acoustic Guitar

This Christmas, I made this crazy decision to make ALL the nieces and nephews gifts this year, including stuff for my little guys as well. It seemed like such a great idea in early November and especially on Black Friday when I scored great deals on all the necessary supplies, but not so much in the frantic-filled days of late December.

On Pinterest, I stumbled across this adorable guitar and thought it would be perfect for Bennett. He's super into playing the guitar now that Kc has been playing for worship on Sunday mornings.

I made the "soft rock guitar", following the pattern provided here:  http://blog.makezine.com/craft/how-to_soft_rock_guitar/. I adjusted a few things here and there, but mainly followed it according to the pattern. The only difference was I wanted the guitar to be much larger than it was intended to be. I adjusted the pattern size to fit a 2" foam piece vs. a 1/4" thin foam.

It was adorable, but my sweet husband said, "Shouldn't you be making him an acoustic guitar since that's what I play???".
[sigh]
I can't draw to save my life so I told my sweet husband that if he could draw me a pattern, I would figure out how to make an acoustic guitar.

He's amazing, that husband of mine. He drew me a pattern I could use for the acoustic guitar and I followed the basic pattern from the original blog post.

He suggested finding a felt that had a pattern to it and I thought this brown was just perfect!
The patterned felt wasn't quite large enough to cover my 2" seat cushion foam, so I had to add a dark brown strip around the sides.

Sewing the frats down. (It's a good thing Kc knows how to play a guitar since I wasn't sure of all the details to include.)

This was the hardest part for me - trying to figure out the best way to sew the back felt piece to the front. I never quite got it right but it worked in the long run. I used some leftover burgandy felt I had purchased last Christmas (to make a tree skirt that never completely got finished) for the back of the guitar.

The completed guitar
Bennett LOVED his guitar. He pulls it out to "play" whenever his favorite worship song comes on. He also uses it as a weapon, but that's beside the point.

I ended up making 4 guitars in total -- 3 electric guitars and 1 acoustic. Bennett's guitar ended up being the most $$ simply because I had more stuff to buy for his and I was able to use so much of the same material for the 3 electric guitars. All in all, it was a fun project to work on and I'm SO pleased with how the acoustic guitar turned out!
