I learned several things by going to this Homecoming shindig. First of all, tailgate with 3rd graders is a whole lot different than tailgating with adults. Yup. They wolfed down their food and then immediately lobbied my dear husband to play football with them. So, I sat there, sitting on a bench, watching my husband beat up on his 3rd graders. Some dad came and sat next to me and asked me, "So, you have a son out there?" and I replied, "No, I have a husband out there."
What did I learn? I learned that those 3rd graders are the luckiest kids in the world and they know it too. You could tell that they thought it was fabulous that their teacher came to their tailgate party and that he then played football with them. I think he eventually became the all-time quarterback (and at times a referee between these little guys) but they looked like they were having fun. :)
Seriously. Does it not look like these little guys are in heaven that their teacher is out there with them?!?!?
The second thing that I learned is that Texas people are kinda strange. Seriously. My mom had warned me that Texans take their football very seriously but it appears they also take their homecoming celebrations very seriously as well. I felt like I'd stepped into another culture that needed some explaining. Like Homecoming "mums". I've heard of them. But I thought it was a thing of the 30's and 40's. How wrong I was. It's still going strong down here in the South. Take this picture for example.
You've got guys wearing flowers and streamers off of their arms. The girls were even bigger and gaudier. They had to tie theirs to their purses because there was no way it would be able to stay on their shoulders. We both sat in the bleachers and just giggled. One teacher told Kc that these mums cost upwards of $80!! Even though it's ridiculous, get me on that bandwagon and I'll totally make them next year and rake in a killing.
So, that's what I learned at TCA's homecoming. My husband is a hero to many 3rd graders and homecoming mums are super hideous and very much in existence down here in Texas.

But where's the bare-chested fans in 42 degree weather with numbers painted on their chests? Is that only in Indiana? Gotta love high school football. Aunt B.
That is so funny! 3rd grade has got to be one of the best grades and those kids are really lucky to have KC to be their teacher! I think Texans are crazy about highschool cheerleading too -- like it's a real sport or something!
Did your Aunt B send you a picture that shows that she knows what she's talking about with the bare chested fan thing?
I can totally picture you saying that about Kc to that dad. HAHA! I love it! Who needs kids when you have a hubby with as much energy?
Yes, I sent the picture of the Indiana fans. Makes a mother proud...Aunt B.
Yes, football is a religion down here. There is SO much trash talking between the schools down here as well.
And yes the "mums". SO tacky, but whatever. They don't ask me. :)
Awesome. Sounds like a great evening. :)
How fun! Hope things are going well! I really should call you sometime - phone time is a little limited these days. :)
